Nirvana always had a special place in the psyche of rock fans, forgetting the mish mash published by the rags at the time and later, we know that the lyrics and the music was written by one of us, dregged out of the soul and true to life, articulating those moments of magic between friends, the bad times, the attitude descended from an anger born from a naive youth and with the realization that society wasn't interested in your ideals. So Kurt got his gang together and like a fire that started slowly, they burst into flames, burned ever so brightly for a while and just as quickly dyed down before been stomped out.
But one special moment when the flames were burning brightly was captured in a mesmerising performance at the 1992 Reading rock festival. Playing a repertoire of 25 songs Nirvana blasted straight into the music after a jokey entry poking fun at rumours of the bands early demise, so we get a vibrant set of attitude dripping tunes that didn't waver in their intensity from start to finish. Opening with the explosive Breed followed quickly by the rush of 'Drain You', Nirvana not giving time for anyone to catch their breath before cascading into Aneurysm.
I must say at this point that the video is perfect, as good as you could expect with enough camera angles to capture the body language and the enormous crowd without going overboard with dizzying picture changes. Once Aneurysm came to a dragging close with some dirty feedback that bled straight into School. There was never any pretence with Nirvana, the titles were as simple as the lyrics, but carried meaning far beyond their simple repetivness.
Still Nirvana haven’t lessened the pace or spoke and we charge into Sliver, at the end Kurt grunts out 'this song is called Bloom" before they crunch into the song, which carries its hidden message behind a grunge fuelled heaviness, by now the crowd are ecstatic and Cobain thanks them.
There is much to much to say about this DVD, and the performance it captured, so I will leave it to yourselves to say it. The DVD comes with a CD copy that displays a different angle on the performance, like a roomful of mirrors you hear the performance in profile which gives something different, so enjoy it.
Nirvana Live at Reading is going to be played more times then any other DVD you will ever own, and is defiantly one to buy and own rather then download and burn, because without the proper case, everyone will know that you just ain't showing respect.
