The first thing this album provides is a source of immense energy and heat - I imagine if you played this to a body of running water you could make a Hydroelectric power plant. I find their music would sit well with many of the better up and coming British bands so it was to my surprise to find out they hail from New Hampshire, USA. Chip on shoulder, activated. They play some seriously heavy metal.
The first track from this ten track release, 'From Holy Water To Holy Wars' kicks of proceedings with a whining, teeth smashingly high guitar line.. only momentarily.. before supernova'ing all over the place. The vocals of Mike Mcgee really do make these songs what they are. Without such a strong voice you might expect this band to settle into obscurity but it's like.. if you listen to the music being played and then imagine vocals on top of that, it would be his voice. He does a great job. Their songs are generally motivated politically and socially so pay attention if you can and try to take something!
Then it goes onto 'Following and Failing' and it follows the same sort of template at first - whining guitar, exploding instrumentals, screaming words, but then it deviates off script slightly with some much slower stuff. It gives you an opportunity to get your breath and listen closely to what Mike is talking about. Songs that have the tempo of that first song will be next to impossible to follow in the way you can this song. There's a point (in this and many others) where the vocals sound like they're coming from a girl - which I found quite interesting for sure!
The next few tracks are rattled off in a very similar sort of vein. You'd be forgiven for thinking that several songs use the exact same music in the background. Who knows? The next stuff is kinda similar. There are some good songs in the filler though, I feel.
- Song 4, 'Service With A Smile', has a sick guitar riff in the background that makes the hair on your testicles stand on end. It has a great chorus as well.
- Song 6, 'Paranoid Deserter', has a much more jucking and jiving tune to it, guaranteed to get your head ducking and diving!
- Song 9, 'You ****ing Fakes', has some really passionate vocals to it. Considering he is screaming his lungs out you might think it is hard to distinguish when he cares and when he doesn't but he's spitting venom and brimstone here.
I would definitely recommend having a listen to this album.
