Hail Of Bullets - Warsaw Rising EP

This EP release sets a searing pace from the word go. This Dutch deathmetal five-piece are unafraid to take on tracks that require ungodly amounts of manic energy and this much is in clear evidence from the opening title track 'Warsaw Rising'. For those of you not versed in second world war history, this was the moment the Polish decided was right to try and throw Germany out of their country. Ever the battlers (previous attempts included cavalry charges against tanks) the Polish forces fell inexorably by the wayside as the Germans flattened 85% of all buildings and killed 200,000 civilians. Brutal.

This song fairly represents this tumultuous time in history by leaping into action with just an amazingly coherent mash of all the instruments together. The beat instantly gets you into the song and it sounds almost like System of a Down on crystal meth. How they make it sound good is beyond me, but it works really, really well. Martin van Drunen screams and hisses as if possessed, telling the story of this brutal event in history with aplomb. For about two minutes straight, Ed Warby drums the exact same beat at a man-killing pace with no rest at all. Two minutes! Amazing. After about 2:30 the awesome bridge utilises a more squealing than thrashing guitar line and gives the song more depth and class. A great opening track.

The second song, 'Liberators', is alot slower and the mournful wailing of guitars between Drunens lyrical waxing sets the tone for an epic song, one that could have been made for the battlefield. The energy is the same however, but rather than put into fast thrashing they focus mainly on raw dripping anger. It shows that they have slightly more variance than your average death metallers. Being able to mix the tempo up and still make it work is vital if you want to stand out from the crowd. Too many bands create albums full of songs at the exact same pace and it can make this reviewer pretty bored to be honest.

The third and final new song on this EP release is called 'Destroyers' and is even slower than the rest of them. This one is much more laid back death metal, one where you stand in the crowd, motionless, united in your rhythmic headbanging. It comes with the kind of guitar riff you got in 'Beat It' by Michael Jackson - don't be put off, it still rocks. An up and down wailing of guitars always does. The slow, groaning aura of this song makes it much harder to listen to than the others but still has great positives.

The last three tracks of takes from their live shows, tracks you may have heard before. 'Red Wolves of Stalin', 'Nachthexen', 'The Crucial Offensive'. Alot of war related tomfoolery to be had here. These dutch guys know how to bang with the best and they get my thumbs up!
