It is just a small part of their story from album Godspeed on the Devil's Thunder – a 13 song tale about Joan-of-Arcs brother in arms, Gilles de Rais. I suggest you google him, his story is a very interesting one. It all starts with a dull, ethereal chanting… an unholy moaning of trapped souls. After this ungodly chanting, a PA announcement from a man who almost seems like the narrator of this story… he proclaims the death of love… and the song jumps straight in with a slow, rocking, ghostly synth line and rhythmic grinding guitars. Dani then jumps in with a toneless grunting, a horrific grinding of his vocal cords. He asks you ‘where will you be?’ several times, a concurrent theme throughout the song. Then a pure, holier female voice, untouched by COF’s darkness, sings a chorus asking the same questions as Dani. The song is symphonic and bought together very well. I remember 8 or 9 years ago when I first heard these guys songs and I felt a little bit sick – I later found out this is more or less their desired response, but I wasn’t endeared. I feel a lot better about the band now – call me weak, but I like this smoother COF, with a set theme and great toe-tapping tracks like this. The song sounds like an epic, the type of song you could put to the backdrop of the Battle of the Somme… the soldiers would hear and become frenzied, fighting harder and faster. The song follows the same beat and line throughout the entire 5:22 and the vocals switch occasionally from Dani to the holy woman. This slow song almost has an emotional, empassioned plea side to it... it is about despair and almost a call to arms – ‘where were you in the great war Daddy?’ – that’s what it feels like their asking. A great listen, and for me at least the rest of this 13 part story beckons.
