my review :p I bought this EP a while ago, when i had just seen SEF live. It probably was a good indicator of what they were like at the time and in terms of style they haven't really changed. However this release has given them the strength to improve as seen by their live shows and newer tracks they have released since. The songs will definately make you bang your head as songs shift from rhythm to rhythm, slow to fast, heavy to melodic - never losing your concentration. 'Warchie' dives straight into the deep end with melody giving way to brutal screams and thereon shifting back and forth with a distinct power. The important thing is the melody never compromises the bands heavy side which seems to be mainly due to the heavy guitar tone and jacko's fast paced drumming. The chords at the start of 'Blinded By Belief' form a perfectly atmospheric introduction and the rest of the song delivers on this promise. Flit's cry of "I don't know many people, but those that I do know are here right now" in the chorus seems an empassioned ode to friends and fans of the band and is all the more meaningful once you experience a SEF gig. Third track 'So Be It' see Flit use clean vocals for large parts of the song, creating a more melodic tone. This song is perhaps the most direct on the album and is also the shortest track at just over four and a half minutes. The melodic chorus eventually gives away to a typically brutal breakdown sure to get limbs moving in the pit. SEF close their EP with 'The Remote Chance Of Survival'. You wish that the 19 minutes plus of track time was fillied with more of their trademark brutality and melody but at just under 5 minutes their last song continues the form of the first three tracks. The quality of the recording arguably lets this release down, sometimes seeming a bit muddy with the screams sometimes low in the mix, but who's to say this was the sound they wanted. It's raw, heavy, bassy and brutal. If you're a fan of bands like Chimaira, Deftones, Killswitch Engage but want something sung with a british accent then this band is for you, and also check out their 2008 album 'rule the day'. |
