Smile The Sound Ex - Palomino Album Review

The Sound Ex - Palomino

‘The Sound Ex’ with their album Palomino is one which explores many genres with each track. At one point I thought I was listening to a heavier ‘Offspring’ and then it flicks to a melodic ‘Police’ type sound (notably track two). Track three ‘loss’ starts with a Rage Against The Machine style riff, but the track is made unique with it’s extended instrumental and vocals sections, turning a potential three minute track into a stormer just short of five minutes. This band describe themselves as ‘Rock/Blues/Soul’ but I would say they have more of an edgy Chili Peppers sound, injected with distortion – as you’ll notice many comparisons are being drawn to other bands with this album, simply because it is so diverse and to pin down a genre is not instantly possible. Nevertheless ‘The Sound Ex’ have produced a solid album from start to finish and it’s an easy listen, but they aren’t doing anything that hasn’t been done before. Musically this band are competent, but they haven’t followed one genre (this may be their greatest decision, but could equally be their greatest downfall). If you are a general rock music fan, you’ll find something you like in Palomino. They have supported acts such as The Subways, The Datsuns and The Dirtbombs, so as you’ll see, quite varied in sound. I wouldn’t dismiss this band straight away and I suggest you listen to their MySpace to make your own decision.
