New Mecanica - Love & Hate

This band aren't one you may have heard before as they come from Portugal, but I can guarantee that they are WORTH listening too. From their first track 'Remember', I realised that this band are capable of raw metal energy. They sing English in clarity unmatched by most English screamo bands! The melodic parts in the chorus of this song are desperate and haunting.

The instrumentals are inventive and mix a lot of different styles together - a wailing guitar, raw guitar pounding, great riffery. I only hope the rest of the album is this good. I turn to song two, the title song 'Love & Hate'
It starts heavily and goes into a croaky half-spoken verse that explodes into action and the chorus makes use of some excellent gravelly guitar backing.

The screeching, halting guitar bits in the middle of the verse give the song a demonic sound and this song is reminiscent of some of the hits of CellDweller. The album continues in the same vein - pulse racingly fast metal where Dinho combines gravelling screaming at the top of his lungs with swiftly spoken words. His grasp of melodic singing isn't great but that isn't that important in a metal band, and the wailing guitars of Walter and Carlos more then make up for this tiny inadequacy.

The instrumentals through all the songs are awesome, inventive and attention grabbing. Your head WILL nod. You WILL tap your fingers on your desk. This band also have a little System of a Down in them, especially in 'Fire Desire'. The similarities are striking, straight from the heavy as hell instrumental introduction to the heavy guitar grinding through the chorus to the unusual bass sound as bridges between chorus and the next verse. The nasally sound of Serj Tankian is also discernible in Dinho's voice. This is definitely a song you should listen too.

I would definitely consider this band one to look out for - a sound like this cannot and will not be limited to Portugal. I personally advocate you purchase their album which will be released on 28th August - this is definitely a pre-release that I enjoyed listening to. Be the trend setter for your mates who will want to know who sung that awesome song you just played them after the crawl home from the pub..

Dinho - vocals
Carlos - guitar
