Slaves To Gravity Live @ The Bar Academy 29-07-2008

2008 has been a rollercoaster ride of a year for Slaves to Gravity, this yearís hottest export on the fringe of highly acclaimed success. With a main stage performance at this yearís Download Festival, a tour with the Goo Goo Dolls and a Kerrang Awards nomination amongst the bandís benchmark achievements this year it seems that the only way is up for the band. The Bar Academy was crammed to the rafters with music fans and judging by the queues outside, tonightís gig was going to be well worth the wait.

The Slaves to Gravity impact was as instant as a large shot of sambuca when they stormed the stage and kicked off with the brilliant Heaven is a Lie. The anticipation was electric as the band geared themselves up at the side of the stage to give the eagerly awaiting crowd an explosive and unforgettable performance. Just seconds in, front man Tommy broke a guitar string but was quickly reimbursed with another guitar thanks to the on hand roadie who ran backwards and forwards throughout the set like a wasp on speed.

On stage the band donning eyeliner and glam rock inspired attire minus the glitter, were striking to look at and each member possessed a real natural rock star quality. Lead vocalist Tommy is the epitome of the supreme rock god Ė with the countenance of Tommy Lee in his stage presence, and the intense and versatile vocals of the likes of Corey Taylor and Grohl in technique and the echo effects on Tommyís vocal were immense and worked well to make the compact Bar Academy feel like a stadium.

Newcomers to the band, donít be fooled. Slaves to Gravity are not scary hair metal or glam rock! This band are commendable masters of their own style of dirty guitar fuelled rock with a breathtaking collection of punchy anthems that are not just about noise and power but melody and mature and insightful lyrical content beyond their years. Slaves to Gravity are without a doubt the most exciting export to emerge from the South West in a long time!

The musicianship of the band was mindblowing and the magnitude of their sound delivered even more than imaginably possible on the stunning recordings on debut album, Scatter the Crow. Itís not difficult to see why Slaves to Gravity would go down tremendously well on a larger stage, with their monstrous performance and hardhitting sound, and every track sounding like an epic. Tommy definitely hit the nail on the head when he said their sound carried well with a big crowd and I will definitely be venturing out to watch them again on a bigger stage.

With temperatures touching 200 degrees inside the venue, it did nothing to hinder the bandís performance and writhing in sweat they delivered unbelievable energy in their 45 minute set which included smash single Mr Regulator, My Poor Hand and Big Red.

Watch out for this band over the next few months. If you havenít heard of them yet, where have you been hibernating? Standing on the shoulders of giants, S2G are feet above their competitors for hottest new band this year and they get my vote 100%.
