Album Review

To coincide with the release of their new album Scatter the Crow, Slaves to Gravity’s spring tour is now well under way. Their self produced album has been mixed by Chris Sheldon, well known for working with the likes of Feeder and Foo Fighters. This is immediately distinctive on hearing the album with its polished and crisp sound.

Opening track, Heaven is a Lie is a corker of a tune, which crashes in with all the front of a loud and brash American wrestler, giving the album immediate promise. The quiet loud formula, made famous by veteran grunge rockers The Pixies many moons ago works well on this track and is likely to appeal to die hard Foo Fighters and old school grunge worshippers alike.

The lead vocals are easily accessible and pleasing on the ear. A cross between Dave Grohl and Corey Taylor is one of the most obvious comparisons. Delicious!! Slaves to Gravity are without a doubt, an air guitar band minus the cheesiness, and this album really does demonstrate the dexterity of the band as musicians. Other stand out tracks include latest single, Mr Regulator, and the stunning and powerful, Doll Size, reminiscent of the melancholy moodiness echoed in a typical old school Incubus track.

Scatter the Crow is an easily accessible album for new listeners to the band, but as a 13 track compilation, after a while it begins to feel slightly cumbersome. A 10 track would have been more appealing, and just enough to leave listeners wanting more. Instead, the album left me feeling slightly drained and exhausted after 13 pretty angst ridden and soul searching lyric inspired tracks. However, after hearing this album, this is a band I for one will definitely be venturing out to see. Slaves to Gravity seem destined for highly acclaimed success, and good luck to them. It’s about time a decent rock band got some recognition. Lets hope they blow all of the trendy indie pop bands that keep making all our ears bleed off the face of the earth!
