Thursday 12th of April brought Deftones to my Uni town of Lincoln. It was interesting to see how the newly built student club could handle a band like Deftones and how many people would turn up.
Me and two friends shuffled in early to buy a ticket on the door (£18 for a student!) and were in before the support band came on. Already the place was pretty busy, the bar that runs the whole back wall of the club was packed with people grabbing beer and spirits.
After waiting 15 minutes for a drink we headed towards the stage to see the first band coming on. I do not know what the bands name was but there is no surprise as they were generic emo. They were tight and played well but the music was far from anything special. The change over started soon enough though and the crowd surged forward pinning people to the railings.
A chant of ‘Chino’ broke out and eventually he appeared with the rest of the band and the crowd went mad.
A mix of the old and the new produced a brilliant set, the likes of Shove it (my own summer) and Back to School getting the larger response. I went in expecting the band to go through the motions being that it was only a Uni gig but everything was spot on. The vocals were perfect if not a little hard to hear (sound engineer to blame) but an above average light show distracted you from that point, blinding you if nothing else.
The show was a huge success and has done wonders for the venues reputation in future. We all just hope Deftones will come back again!
