First UK Air Guitar Championships
In association with the annual Air Guitar World Championships, the UK’s first ever official national Air Guitar Championships takes place at Islington Academy, London N1 on Friday 1 September 2006
Supported by rock legends including Brian May, this pastime once subjected to bedrooms has become a global cult phenomenon, with 14 countries across the globe taking part in the annual World Championships held in Oulu, Finland where it is now recognised as a national sport.
The first official winner of the UK Championships will receive automatic entry and be taken to the 11th World Championships in Oulu on Friday 8 September, attended by thousands of fans.
Air Guitar is viewed by many performers as the last pure art form – the only one to be untouched by sponsorship, without financial rewards, rehearsals or props – the one true test of man. Its ideology is also to promote world peace, as the one and only twice World Champion, Londoner Zac Monro comments ‘There are two things to remember: it is very hard to hold a weapon with an air guitar in your hands and secondly, you can take everything from a person – their home, their possessions, but you can’t take something that is invisible.” Arriving at the 2002 Championships to retain his World Title, he informed the Finnish airport he’d lost his air guitar, setting the staff off on a 3 week search…
Zac (now retired from air guitar but not his day job as an architect) is UK Championships Event Director and is available for interviews/comments. He’ll also be attending Edinburgh Film Fest for the screening of new feature film ‘Air Guitar Nation’ documenting the rise of the pastime.
