Def Leppard Phil Collen at Namm Showing off New 'Jackson' Guitar

Def Leppard Hysteria still strong

Def Lepard Biog

Def Leppard formed in 1977 in Sheffield, England, as part of the Heavy Metal movement. Although as the band`s sound and production became more polished they became increasingly associated with the Glam metal movement, the band always expressed distaste at this. Def Leppard are known for their distinctive sound featuring electronic drums.

Originally the band consisted of Rick Savage (bass), Tony Kenning (drums) and Pete Willis (guitars). When Joe Elliot auditioned (originally as a guitarist, but it was later decided that he would make a better vocalist) they adopted Def Leppard. After some local success, the band added Steve Clarke as a second guitarist. Tony Kenning was fired for the EP Getcha Rocks Off and replaced by Frank Noon. This EP was to be the band`s first commercially released recording and received support and airplay from DJ John Peel.

Late 1978 saw a signing to Mercury Records and the replacement of Frank Noon with Rick Allen. Their debut album On Through the Night was released in 1980. It was not commercially successful, but attracted attention in the industry, allowing the band to work with new production talent on the next album, High `N` Dry, released in 1981 with a more America-friendly sound. The video for the song `Bringin on the Heartbreak´ from this album was to be one of the first Metal videos to be played on MTV. At this stage Phil Collen replaced Pete Willis on guitar and Pyromania was recorded. Released in 1983, Pyromania was a great success, selling over 6 million copies in 1983 and 1984.

During the early stages of recording the band`s next album, drummer Rick Allen lost his left arm in a car crash. Rick was determined to continue and with the use of a custom designed drum kit was able to return to work on the record, Hysteria, released in 1987. It was not an immediate success, but the first UK single, `Animal` was the song to finally break the band in their home country. The fourth single, `Pour Some Sugar on Me` ensured the album`s later success in the US.

During work on Def Leppard`s fifth album, guitar Steve Clarke unfortunately died of a drug and alcohol overdose in January 1991. The Album Adrenalize was released in 1992 and entered the US charts at number 1.

Vivian Campbell joined the band as guitarist in 1992. Campbell had previously been in Dio and Whitesnake. In 1993 the band released Retro Active, a collection of rare or previously unreleased songs and would release 2 further albums of original music in the 90s, `Slang` in 1996 and Euphoria in 1999.

The band`s tenth album X was released in 2002, followed by a best of CD in 2004. (2005 in the US). A covers album entitled `Yeah!` was released in 2006 with classic rock songs of the band`s childhood. 2008 saw the release of Songs from the Sparkle Lounge and a tour in support of the album. The band also played a one of show with county singer Taylor Swift in Nashville in this year. A further tour is allegedly planned for 2011, the release of a live album from this tour being sure to win the band further Signed gold disc - Gold discs.

Def Leppard are still hoping to release a photographic history of the band and have created a book that should be out around May 4th 2011 with the title of "Def Leppard - The Definitive Visual History" so watch out for that!

it will be published by Chronicle Books it will be a Hardback and will contain 232 pages with Ross Halfin listed as the photographer

Joe Elliott 30th April 2010 Quote

"We've got a great project of old photos of Ross Halfin's - we're starting a collection of maybe four or five volumes of different periods of the band so we're working on the early years stuff. For maybe Christmas or so. It'll be part of a set of six volumes released over maybe two or three years."
